Storing and sharing copyrighted content

Since the days of Napster lots of people have been illegally sharing copyrighted content across the internet but some people are still unsure if they are breaking the law. We have included the general US and UK law in simple words below to make it clear what you can store and share on Avandrive.

What is copyright?

Copyright is a legal right for an originator to print, publish, perform, film, or record a piece of art, music, or writing. The book you purchased from a book store is copyrighted, the music you purchased on iTunes is copyrighted, as are the movies you watch in the cinema. In some cases work is copyrighted as soon as it has been created or published, in other situations companies or individuals need to register their work.

The key thing to remember about copyright is that it is illegal to copy and distribute a copyrighted piece of work. If you do take part in this type of activity you could be sued.

How does this affect me?

If you have downloaded a file from a reputable sources such as iTunes, Amazon, or the Google Play store you are legally purchasing a copyrighted file. This means that you can listen to that file on the device you downloaded it onto.

Users can also keep a copy of their files in other locations, for storage or for usage by them. This is the reason you can connect multiple iPods to one iTunes account and have the same song on 4 or 5 devices. This is also the reason you can store copyrighted files in the Cloud and then stream or view them through other devices. However you cannot give access to copyrighted files to your friends or family, through streaming or downloading, without the copyright holder’s permission.

What can I share?

Legally you can use Avandrive to share content which has been created by you. You can also share files that have been created by a family, friend or co-worker if you have permission. Avandrive’s terms and conditions state the following; “files and other content in the services may be protected by intellectual property rights of others. Please do not copy, upload, download, or share files unless you have the right to do so. You, not Avandrive, will be fully responsible and liable for what you copy, share, upload, download or otherwise use while using the Services.”. This means you can share images of your family and friends, home movies, and documents with others via Avandrive but you cannot use Avandrive to share copyrighted files.
